University of Gdańsk as Conference Location


The Conference takes place in Gdańsk, an old merchant city with long tradition of international contacts and scientific research (Hevelius, Fahrenheit, Schopenhauer) and recently a cradle of "Solidarity". In 1997 Gdańsk celebrated its Millennium, although Gdańsk existed before the famous St. Adalbert mission in 997. There are many places worth to visit like monuments, museums, theatres, parks, cathedrals, churches. The same concerns many recognized international yearly events like Oliva Organ Festival and Saint Dominic Fair. Gdańsk preserved its unique atmosphere thanks to the charm of the Old City and many pleasant restaurants and cafes of different national cuisines. Gdańsk has been always the meeting place of Eastern and Western European nations and cultures.

Although the tradition of academic teaching in Gdańsk goes back to the Renaissance, the University of Gdańsk was established in 1970. Now it consists of nine faculties:

  • Biology, Geography and Oceanology
  • Chemistry
  • Economics
  • Languages and History
  • Mathematics and Physics
  • Social and Physics
  • Law and Administration
  • Management
  • Biotechnology

Actually over 21000 students attends the courses. University of Gdańsk maintains many international contacts - academic exchange of teachers and students. A number of international research programs has been carried out. The University has been particularly active with educational and research programs connected with the accession of Poland to the European Union.

Building of faculty of Business Administration

The first courses in the field of Information Systems at Faculty of Management were given already in the half of sixties. Gradually the curriculum and the laboratories were extended and improved. In the result, in November 1982 the independent Department of Information Systems at University of Gdańsk was established. The team of twenty scholars teaches on bachelor, master, MBA and doctoral levels. Each semester the graduate program of IS/IT is improved. In recent several years IS Department accomplished internationally reported surveys on key issues in information management, business process reengineering in small business as well as the analyses of e-business development in Poland. The substantial modernization of curriculum and laboratories took place in 1994-1997 during the accomplishment of TEMPUS project with Universities of Barcelona and Lisbon.
